چکیده

[1] We investigate streamer formation in the troposphere, in electric fields above the breakdown threshold. With fully three-dimensional particle simulations, we study the combined effect of natural background ionization and of photo-ionization on the discharge morphology. In previous investigations based on deterministic fluid models without background ionization, so-called double-headed streamers emerged. But in our improved model, many electron avalanches start to grow at different locations. Eventually, the avalanches collectively screen the electric field in the interior of the discharge. This happens after what we call the “ionization screening time,” for which we give an analytical estimate. As this time is comparable to the streamer formation time, we conclude that isolated streamers are unlikely to exist in fields well above breakdown in atmospheric air.Citation: Sun, A. B., J. Streamer discharges can move perpendicularly to the electric field

Streamer discharges are a primary mode of electric breakdown in thunderstorms and high voltage technology; they are generally believed to grow along electric field lines. However, we here give experimental and numerical evidence that streamers can propagate nearly perpendicularly to the background electric field. These streamers are guided by pre-ionization that is orders of magnitude lower tha...

Emergence of sprite streamers from screening-ionization waves in the lower ionosphere

Sprite discharges above thunderclouds at altitudes of 40–90 km (refs 1–5) are usually created by a strong positive cloud-to-ground lightning flash6. Sometimes these sprite discharges emerge from a visible halo5,7–9, and during the first stage they always propagate downwards and branch on their way5,7,9–11. Modelling efforts have been restricted to conditions of non-ionized air of constant densi...

Formation of streamer discharges from an isolated ionization column at subbreakdown conditions.

This Letter reports a modeling study on the formation of streamer discharges from an isolated ionization column under subbreakdown condition. Numerical simulations show that positive streamers are able to form from the tip of an ionization column in a uniform applied electric field well below the breakdown threshold field. However, even when the applied field approaches the breakdown threshold ...

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres Streamer formation and branching frommodel hydrometeors in subbreakdown conditions inside thunderclouds

Electric field values measured inside thunderclouds have consistently been reported to be up to an order of magnitude lower than the value required for the conventional electrical breakdown of air. This result has made it difficult to explain how lightning frequently occurs in thunderclouds. A few different theories have been offered to explain the lightning initiation process, one of them bein...

Branching and path-deviation of positive streamers resulting from statistical photon transport

The branching and change in direction of propagation (path-deviation) of positive streamers in molecular gases such as air likely require a statistical process which perturbs the head of the streamer and produces an asymmetry in its space charge density. In this paper, the mechanisms for path-deviation and branching of atmospheric pressure positive streamer discharges in dry air are numerically...
